Refurbished vs. Used vs. Open-Box iPhones: What's the Difference

These three terms get used loosely — sometimes interchangeably — by sellers, but they mean different things, and the difference affects both price and how much risk you're taking on.

Refurbished

A refurbished iPhone has gone through a formal inspection and repair process: diagnostics, replacement of worn parts (commonly the battery), cosmetic cleanup, a factory data wipe, and functional testing before resale. The seller stands behind that process, usually with:

  • A grading system (like "Excellent," "Good," "Fair") describing cosmetic condition
  • A warranty, typically 90 days to 1 year depending on the seller
  • A stated battery health minimum

Apple's own Certified Refurbished program is the gold standard here — units come with a new battery and outer shell, a full one-year warranty, and the same accessories as a new purchase, usually at 10–15% off retail. Third-party refurbishers (Back Market, Gazelle, Decluttr, and similar) are typically cheaper but vary more in quality — check their specific grading and warranty terms.

Used

A used iPhone is sold as-is by an individual or a marketplace like eBay, Craigslist, or Facebook Marketplace, with no guaranteed inspection or repair process. What you see is what you get — the seller may or may not disclose battery health, screen condition, or repair history accurately. Prices are usually the lowest of the three categories, but so is your protection if something's wrong.

If you go this route: insist on the seller showing you Settings → Battery → Battery Health live (see our full guide to checking battery health for what the numbers mean), confirm carrier-lock status with the seller before paying, check the device's warranty status through Apple's Check Coverage tool, and use a payment method with buyer protection.

Open-Box

An open-box iPhone is technically new — it was purchased, then returned unused or barely used, often because the buyer changed their mind rather than because anything was wrong with it. Retailers resell these at a discount even though the phone itself has full or nearly full battery health and no wear. Open-box is usually the best value of the three if you can find it, since you're getting near-new condition without near-new pricing — but availability is inconsistent since it depends entirely on what gets returned.

Quick comparison

Inspection ProcessTypical WarrantyBattery ConditionPrice vs. New
RefurbishedYes, formal90 days–1 yearOften replaced20–40% off
UsedNoNone (marketplace-dependent)Unknown/unverified30–50% off
Open-BoxMinimal (returns check)Often full original warrantyNear-new10–20% off

The right choice comes down to how much you value certainty versus price. If you want the lowest possible cost and are comfortable doing your own verification, used marketplaces can work. If you want a guarantee behind what you're buying, refurbished — ideally Apple Certified or a reputable third party — is the safer bet.

How to Check Battery Health Before Buying a Refurbished iPhone

Battery health is the single most important number to check on any refurbished iPhone — more important than storage size, more important than cosmetic condition. A phone that looks flawless with a worn-out battery will disappoint you within a month; a phone with a few scratches and a strong battery will serve you well for years.

Where to find it

On any iPhone running a reasonably current iOS version:

Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging (on iPhone 15 or later, it's just "Battery Health")

This shows a percentage labeled "Maximum Capacity" — this is the battery's current capacity compared to when it was new. Apple's own support guide walks through where to find battery health and usage details if your menu looks different from what's described here.

What the numbers mean

  • 90–100%: Excellent. Battery is in great shape, close to original performance.
  • 80–89%: Good, and typical for a well-maintained refurbished phone. Apple itself considers 80% the threshold for "normal" battery condition.
  • Below 80%: Noticeably degraded. You'll likely notice faster drain and possibly unexpected shutdowns under heavy use. Not a dealbreaker if the price reflects it and you plan to replace the battery, but factor in a $70–100 battery replacement cost.

Apple explains exactly how this measurement works, and what triggers its built-in performance management, in its iPhone battery and performance support article — worth a skim if you want the full technical picture.

If you're buying in person

Ask the seller to open Settings and show you the Battery Health screen directly — don't take their word for a percentage listed in an ad. Screenshots can be faked or outdated; walk through it live if you can.

If you're buying online

Reputable refurbishers (Apple Certified Refurbished, Back Market, Gazelle, and similar) typically guarantee a minimum battery health percentage (often 80%+) and will replace the battery before shipping if it doesn't meet that bar. Read the specific listing — "tested" and "guaranteed minimum" are not the same thing, and cheaper marketplace listings from individual sellers often don't disclose battery health at all unless you ask directly.

A quick red flag to watch for

If a seller can't or won't tell you the battery health percentage, or the listing has no return window, treat that as a warning sign rather than an oversight. A legitimate refurbisher has this number on hand instantly — it's one of the first things checked during refurbishment.

One more thing worth checking: if the phone shows "Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple battery" on the Battery Health screen, that's a sign of a non-original replacement battery, and Apple explains what that means in its guide to genuine iPhone batteries.

Battery health aside, it's also worth knowing exactly what "refurbished" means versus "used" or "open-box," since sellers use those terms inconsistently — that's next.

Best Refurbished iPhones to Buy in 2026

If you're shopping for a refurbished iPhone this year, timing actually works in your favor. Apple's current lineup tops out with the iPhone 17 family (iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and Pro Max) alongside the budget-friendly iPhone 17e, which means older flagships have been trading down in price for a while now — and refurbished units from a few generations back are hitting a genuine sweet spot of price versus performance.

Here's how to think about which generation to target.

The sweet spot: iPhone 13 and 14

For most buyers, a refurbished iPhone 13 or 14 is the best value on the market right now. You can see how these generations stack up against current models on Apple's own iPhone comparison tool. Both still get iOS updates, both handle everyday use (browsing, photos, streaming, social apps) without any hiccup, and both have dropped enough in price that a certified refurbished unit often costs less than half of a new flagship. The 14 adds a slightly better camera system and Crash Detection; the 13 is usually the cheaper of the two and still excellent for anyone who isn't chasing the latest camera specs.

If you want a few more years of support: iPhone 15 or 15 Pro

The iPhone 15 lineup was the first to move to USB-C, which matters if you want one charging cable across your devices going forward. The 15 Pro and Pro Max are also the starting point for Apple Intelligence support, so if on-device AI features matter to you, that's the generation to aim for. Refurbished 15-series units cost more than 13/14 but still undercut anything current.

If budget is the top priority: iPhone 12 or SE (3rd gen)

Both are still supported with security updates and perform fine for calls, texts, and light app use. Battery life and camera quality are the main trade-offs versus newer models. These are a reasonable pick for a second phone, a kid's first phone, or a backup device — just don't expect them to feel fast for more than a couple more years.

What to actually check before buying

Regardless of generation, the model number matters more than the marketing name. A quick gotcha with refurbished phones: sellers don't always specify whether a unit is carrier-locked, and a locked refurb from a carrier you don't use is effectively a paperweight until you switch. Always confirm carrier status before paying, and once you have a device in hand, you can check its warranty and coverage status directly through Apple's Check Coverage tool.

If you want the lowest-risk option, Apple's own Certified Refurbished store sells directly refurbished models with a full one-year warranty — worth comparing against third-party sellers before you decide where to buy.

We'll cover exactly how to check battery health — arguably the single most important number on a refurbished phone — in the next post.

Refurbished iphone 5s and refurbished iphone 5c Availability

With the launch of the iphone 5s and the iphone 5c slated on Sept 20 2013. The question again arises on the availability of the refurbished iphone 5s and the refurbished iphone 5c. Also what will be the price of these refurbished iphones ?

Here is a quick feature glance of the 5s

The new physical addition to the iPhone 5S is the TouchID ring built into the home button. This silver ring acts as a fingerprint reader for enhanced security. It can read in any orientation and scans below the epidermal skin layers. To avoid scratches, the home button is now made from sapphire crystal.

The rear camera sensor is around 15% larger than the outgoing model, and uses 1.5 micron pixels for improved low-light shooting. The f/2.2 aperture is larger too, and is paired with a twin-LED flash for even more light when shooting in dark conditions. Apple calls it "True Tone", with one cool white flash and a second warmer amber LED that automatically adjusts depending on lighting conditions for the best picture. Image stabilisation and best shot selection are both automatic. There's also a burst shot mode and 120fps slow motion video recording at 720p, along with the new filters found in iOS7.

It is paired with an M7 Motion Coprocessor, which handles accelerometer, compass and gyroscope duties. It can tell whether you're walking, driving or stationary, and app developers will be able to tap into it in combination with GPS. Despite the presence of two processors, it should still manage 10 hours of 3G or 4G browsing, or up to 250 hours of standby on a single charge.
It also supports global LTE bands, apparently more than any other smartphone in the world, so will have no trouble working on 4G networks in every country it launches in.
The iPhone 5S will launch with iOS 7, the latest version of Apple's mobile OS. It's a major visual departure for the software, with a pastel colour scheme, flattened icons and no more skeuomorphic elements (the way the notes app looked like real lined paper).
Multitasking has been improved so apps update through push notifications, not just when you switch back to them from other apps. Notification Sync will please owners of multiple iOS devices, as swiping a message away from an iPhone 5S will also dismiss it from an iPad.

Apple to Release New iphone in June

Apple (AAPL) will likely announce a new iPhone at its Worldwide Developers Conference on or around June 8. The new phone will probably be faster and more powerful than the current iPhone -- think video, better camera, faster Internet, etc. -- around the current price. (It's possible the current iPhone will also get cheaper -- perhaps $99.) New iPhones might not be available for purchase until July. But it's worth waiting at least until Apple shows off what they're going to offer this year. The iPhone will still probably be an AT&T (T) exclusive this year.
Wonder what the refurbished iphone scene will look like then. Watch this space...

Refurbished iphone - Now with removable battery *Not recommended*

Now you can replace your Refurbished iphone or new iPhone’s battery on your own. Though possible it appears to be a tough surgical procedure and if you are willing to perform this operation at your own risk the guys over at Gear Live have posted a video showing how you can replace your very own iPhone battery.

Apple will repair your iPhone for a service fee of $79, plus $6.95 shipping with the caveat that service may not be available if your iPhone has been damaged due to accident or abuse therefore when you open up the iPhone, there’s a chance of something going wrong, so you could end up paying a lot more than it would have cost you to just get the battery from Apple in the first place.

So the question is how long will the iphone batteries last? iphone owners hope the batteries last long enough that you won’t be doing this very often, but the phones are still pretty new, so we haven’t really found out yet.

The video shows that it is beyond the average user to perform this kind of surgery sucessfully therefore the refurbiphone blog does not recommend this as a try it at home kindof stuff!
